Kaviar Forge & Gallery Kaviar Forge Tours
Category: Louisville Shopping in Kentucky
Description of this Louisville Activity: Strike While the Iron’s Hot: Kaviar Forge Tours
Enjoy the heat and beauty of glowing hot iron. The new tours of Kaviar Forge & Gallery will take you on an unforgettable journey though the history of metalworking. You will experience the past, present, and future of blacksmithing from the discovery of copper and the Bronze Age, to the Iron Age including the post industrialization of ironwork into its present art form.
Kaviar Forge & Gallery offers general tours to the public on Fridays at 2 PM with an admission fee of $10 per person. The tour starts in the media room attached to Kaviar Forge with a verbal presentation giving an introduction into the history of blacksmithing followed by a DVD documenting renowned master blacksmith Craig Kaviar and his work. Afterward we invite guests to join us in the forge to witness red hot iron at 3000 degrees turn soft as wet clay while magically fashioned into art. Though blacksmithing historically uses coal for fuel, our proudest innovation is having turned our main forge more eco-friendly to run on waste vegetable oil provided by the neighborhood restaurants on Frankfort Avenue. Visitors will also have the opportunity to visit the gallery to view completed works from the forge and other artists throughout Kentucky including rotating art exhibitions, and fine hand-crafted works in metal, ceramics, fiber art, glass, jewelry, wood, painting, sculpture, as well as artistic wedding rings.
As a staple to the Clifton neighborhood in Louisville since 1984 sculptor blacksmith Craig Kaviar has opened the forge doors inviting visitors in for a behind-the-scenes look into his blazing world of metal. Mr. Kaviar has produced commissioned works for the city, private corporations, and collectors. Locally his work includes the sculpture “Forging Ahead” at the Kentucky Center for the Arts, door handles for the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, Whole Foods Wine Shop, and Blue Dog Bakery. Gates and grills were designed and constructed for Christ Church Cathedral and First Unitarian Church.
Kaviar Forge & Gallery is committed to facilitating support for the artistic community by providing opportunities for new and emerging artists along with well seasoned artists who continue to perfect their craft.
