Biscayne National Park National Park
Category: Key Biscayne National Park near Miami, Florida
Description of this Miami area Attraction: Its a moody place, Biscayne National Park.
Some days, Biscayne Bay's shallow waters are glassy smooth, a window on another world. Other times, the wind whistles and whips, creating white waves that bite like teeth at an angry sky.
Some days are quiet and still, the silence broken only by the sound of ocean ripples lapping at the mangrove-fringed shoreline, the exhalation of a manatee, or a crab scuttling across the leaf-strewn forest floor. On weekends, the laughter of children, the sizzle of burgers on a grill, or the "woosh" of water being cleared from a snorkel takes over.
Some days, the water over the reef is so clear that every detail on the bottom is visible, and zooming across it on a boat can seem like flying on air. Then there are blustery days when it is milky with mud stirred up by wind and wave.
Even the 10,000 year human history of the place reflects its temperamental nature. Idyllic vignettes of a Tequesta Indian man free-diving for conch from a dugout canoe, or a Bahamian woman watching the sunset across a tidal creek after a hard day's work contrast with violent shipwrecks, acts of piracy, and a long, hard struggle for environmental protection.
We invite you to use this website as a way to test the waters, and hope that you will plan a visit to immerse yourself in the many moods of Biscayne National Park.

DuBois Pioneer Home Tour this 1898 Historic Home
Category: Jupiter Museum near Miami, Florida User Rating:
Description of this Miami area Attraction: The 1898 shingle-style home sits atop a Native American Shell Mound and contains period furnishings, clothing and artifacts. The home was built by Harry and Susan DuBois and provides a unique glimpse of life in the area at the turn of the century. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Harry DuBois was born February 10, 1871 (d. 1924), on a farm in Holmdel, New Jersey. His father, John Rue DuBois (1844-1914), and mother, Anna Douglass DuBois (1848-1928), had an apple orchard in New Jersey and grew vegetables. When Harry was 16 years old, he came to Florida in 1887 to work in an orange grove on Merritt Island (Brevard County). In 1892, he sailed into the Jupiter Inlet and noticed the Indian shell mound and liked the location. He bought 20 acres of land on what is now the Intra-coastal Waterway, and grew pineapples on 10 acres. DuBois befriended Captain Charles Carlin and became part of Carlin’s crew at the Jupiter Life Saving Station and helped him build the DuBois Home.

Coral Castle Coral Castle, made of 1,100 tons of coral for his sweet 16
Category: Homestead Historic Site near Miami, Florida
Description of this Miami area Attraction: If you had visited Coral Castle in the 1940s you would have been greeted enthusiastically by a man weighing a mere 100 pounds and standing just over 5 feet tall. He would have asked you for ten cents admission and introduced you to his fantasy world. As you moved around his sculpture garden in stone, and the significance of each piece was explained, you would have been witness to the great pride Ed Leedskalnin took in his work. Since it is documented that no one ever witnessed Ed’s labor in building his beloved Coral Castle, some have said he had supernatural powers. Ed would only say that he knew the secrets used to build the ancient pyramids and if he could learn them, you could too.
Today, you can tour the Coral Castle using our audio stands, with narration available in English, Spanish, French or German. We also have knowledgeable guides available to conduct tours. Features of the Coral Castle Museum include a 9-ton gate that moves with just a touch of the finger, a Polaris telescope and functioning rocking chairs – all made entirely of stone.
We invite you to witness for yourself what millions saw on national TV’s “That’s Incredible,” “In Search Of…”, “You Asked For It!” and “Ripley’s Believe It or Not”. Even rock star Billy Idol wrote his hit song, “Sweet Sixteen” about Ed’s lost love. We wonder what was the inspiration that could cause a man to spend 28 years to carve a Coral Castle from the ground up using nothing but home made tools. An homage to unrequited love? Perhaps to illustrate ancient sciences that defy gravity? Or maybe just sheer, raw human determination? The Coral Castle is an everlasting mystery to those who explore it.
