| Description | The clever pleasures of ‘SCROOGE IN ROUGE: A British Musical Hall Christmas Carol” are abundant, varied, risqué and virtually non-stop. It is uproarious entertainment; a brilliantly constructed funhouse that works on multiple levels and provides holiday theatergoers with something to cheer about. This three-actor gem of a show highlights the notable virtuosity of an acting trio as they create, with great bombast and bravado, a well-delineated cast of over twenty characters between them. The show provides giddy games of gender, identity, reality and theatricality, all within the framework of the music hall at its early height in 1843. This happens to be the year that Charles Dickens wrote his potboiler of a morality tale to make a quick quid.
The site and era of this wickedly fun satire fast forwards to a tatty establishment in Victorian England - Her Majesty’s Promenade Grand Theatre, All Saints-on-the-Wash, Blackpool. The Royal Music Hall’s twenty-member Variety Players presentation of their beloved musical melodrama “A Christmas Carol” becomes seriously hampered by seventeen of the players falling victim to food poisoning. It would make Dickens, The Bard and every other thespian of repute proud to know that the diminished players opt for “the show must go on.” As the action to do so is ignited, in the truest sense of the overused phrase…hilarity ensues!

ABOUT:
Headlined by Director/Writer and 1/3 of the acting chops on stage is RICKY GRAHAM. The amazingly talented Mr. Graham not only directs, he also wrote the book and lyrics (with “interesting bits”) from his co-stars. JEFFERY T. ROBERSON, often better known as his alter ego VARLA JEAN MERMAN provides gilded vocals and a gargantuan presence. The astounding Roberson plays a myriad of dual gender roles as does YVETTE HARGIS, a stage presence to be reckoned with, if ever there were one. All three New Orleans-based performers are at the top of their game with a dizzying display of swift, seamless character shifts. The familiar sounding Dickensian characters, with a comic bent, are all there: Scrooge, himself along with the colorful Vesta Virile, Lottie Obligato, Bob Cratchit, Hermione, Mr. Fezziwig, Vesta Tilley, Gladys the Maid, et al. Watching them bounce in and out of twenty-four different characters is akin to observing a master class in the art of intentional overacting. JEFFERSON TURNER (as Alfred Da Capo) provides the musical composition and accompaniment with a real feel for the period, vamping up the theme, creating a faux operetta and all general sorts of merry melodies while tickling the ivories.
