| Description | Salem CultureFest: Travel the World without the Airfare
The Salem Culturefest is held each July on the Salem Common (next to the historic Hawthorne Hotel). This event features live bands who showcase many cultures and styles, as well as other performers who entertain you while you enjoy exploring the unique arts, crafts, and wares of our area's finest artists and crafters. Everyone is welcomed to attend this fun family-friendly event, and it is our hope to make this event a permanent part of Salem's annual events.
One of the primary goals of the Salem CultureFest is to bring to the surface the many cultures and diversity found in and around Salem, Massachusetts. For a city with such a rich history, Salem should become known for what it truly is: A place to explore anytime of the year.
Introducing Salem CultureFest 2008
The 3rd annual Salem CultureFest will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 26 & July 27, on the Salem Common in Salem, Massachusetts. This festival is hosted by a nonprofit organization called A3D, Inc. (African Development through Drum & Dance).
The Salem CultureFest showcases talent found in and around the Salem area, while also sharing the many cultures found locally, such as the high energy West African World Fusion band MAMADOU and Debra Crosby's Talent Quest TV Show Winner's Circle. Performers coming from diverse world traditions will be offering live entertainment on both days of this exciting event.
In addition, we will start each day with a family-friendly parade. We have over 50 vendors participating with wares including framed art and photos, several types of jewelry, pottery, balloons, toys, carvings, candles, hand-loomed scarves, food, shirts, hats and more. Much of what you will find at this festival is handmade, available directly from the artists who crafted them.
Each day will officially open with the singing of the National Anthem followed by A3D's African Drumming circle, led by Mamadou Diop (leader of the popular MAMADOU band).
Bands and Performers scheduled to perform on Saturday and Sunday include:
Debra Crosby's Talent Quest TV Winners Circle, Youth Ukraine and Russian dancers, Lance Houston Jazz Quintet, Master Drummer Joh Camara, MAMADOU, Sisters In Dance, Liana Veda, The Jolly Rogues, and Kabu-Jazz Trio (featuring Candida Rose).
There are many other events and activities you will find throughout the festival, such as face painting, chair massage, and more. Fun for the kids include pony rides, clowns, and more to be announced.
A3D, Inc. (the host of this festival) has a vision to open a North Shore based multicultural center in Salem, Massachusetts, with the Salem CultureFest being a platform to invite local citizens of Salem and the greater North Shore area to experience the best of the cultural diversity and festivities already present in the area for themselves. It is the hope of A3D that the North Shore community will embrace the idea of having a local multicultural center.
In addition to using the monies raised at the festival to fund A3D goals, 10% of the proceeds from the festival will be donated directly to the Salem School Foundation to assist raising the much needed funds for Salem's public schools. Any additional funds raised at the Salem CultureFest will help A3D's humanitarian efforts in West Africa. Through the Salem CultureFest, A3D's wish is to bring true meaning to the phrase "think globally and act locally".
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Salem Cultural Council, a local agency that is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
