| ***** | I had the pleasure to see "The Glass Menagerie" at the Winni Playhouse last night. I have worked professionally in theatre, and I have seen numerous productions of this play. I have to say, honestly, that this is the first time I have truly been affected by its power.
Under Neil Pankhurst's masterful direction, the cast and designers of Menagerie treated the audience to a powerful, haunting and beautiful piece of theatre which left the audience in awe and speechless (as was evident by the complete silence for 10-15 seconds following the final blow out of Laura's candle).
The cast is headed by Broadway vet Carolyn Kirsch as Amanda and New York actor Adam Kee as Tom. They do not play their characters. They ARE these characters. They create characters that are multi-dimensional and unforgettable. They are supported by Casey Unterman and Alison Weisgall who are beautifully rich during their long scene in Act Two.
Adam Kee's final speech to the audience, which begins: "I didn't go to the moon" is truly one of Williams' most profound, and Kee understands what is going on underneath the poetry of the language. I may not recover from the strength of his vulnerability during this speech for many months. Kirsch's long speech in Act One, which refers to her days in Blue Mountain with jonquils is equally impressive and effective.
Overall, this is a performance not to be missed. It is easy to overplay Tennessee Williams, turning into melodrama. But this cast with Pankhurst's direction understands that the strength of this American dramatist comes through when the actors allow the poetry to speak for itself
