Description of this District of Columbia Event: The 4th Annual DC Poetry Festival at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre will celebrate the Howard Theatre. The show this year will be headlined by Ayanna Gregory, a gifted singer/song writer and daughter of world famous comedian Dick Gregory. She combines R&B, jazz, gospel, and the blues into a powerful message through her music. There will also be performances by Def Poets Tommy Bottoms and “Breeze.” The Johnny Artis Band will perform a musical tribute to those artists who graced the Howard Theatre stage. We will also offer music from Steven B & Friends. This show will be hosted by Joe Gorham from WHUR – FM. Mr. Gorham is the host of Joe’s place on WHUR_FM and WHUR World. This event is free to the public, however we ask for your donation. Your donation will help restore the Historic Howard Theatre.

Baltimore-Washington Parkway

Description of this District of Columbia Attraction: Opened in 1954, the parkway is a 29-mile scenic highway that connects Baltimore, Maryland with Washington, D.C. The part of the parkway from Washington, D.C. to Fort Meade,Maryland is managed by the National Park Service.

Although the first concept of Parkway design was envisioned by Pierre L'Enfant in his 18th century plan, the concept of a parkway in Washington, D.C. was not approved until 1902. At that time, Parkways were designed for use by bicyclists and horse-drawn carriages.

There are no tolls or fees for use on the parkway. There are no trucks allowed on the parkway.

The United States Park Police patrol the parkway.

Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park

Description of this District of Columbia Attraction: Due to high waters, temporary closings include the Hancock boat ramp and McMahons Mill to Lock 41 area in Washington County and the Lander area and Monocacy boat ramp in Frederick County. High water is extremely dangerous and visitors should avoid walking near the water's edge or boating in swollen streams and rivers. The Olmsted Island bridges to the Great Falls Overlook, the Billy Goat Trail Section A and Bear Island are now OPEN.
