The Florence Griswold Museum The Home of American Impressionism

Description of this Mystic Country area Attraction: A historic center for American art, the Florence Griswold Museum encompasses eleven acres along the Lieutenant River in Old Lyme. In addition to the original 1817 Griswold House, where the artists of the Lyme Art colony lived, the Museum features a contemporary riverfront gallery, education center, historic gardens, and a restored artist studio.

*****May Night: Willard Metcalf in Old Lyme
Metcalf's landscapes created at Old Lyme were acclaimed by critics, sought out by collectors, and provided the impetus for his reputation as a major figure in American Art. The Museum is home to the largest public collection of Metcalf artifacts. May Night emphasizes these holdings as well as loans from distinguished private collections and public institutions such as the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

******The Allen Sisters: Pictorial Photographers of New England 1885-1920
Sisters Frances and Mary Allen created exquisite photographs of New England country life, figure and child studies, and landscapes of New England, Great Britain and California. The exhibition will compare and contrast pictorialist photography with paintings of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Museum’s alive with the sparkle and excitement of lavish Fantasy Trees inspired by exotic lands and faraway places and the holiday icon, Miss Florence’s Artist Tree. Wooden palettes painted by over 50 artists highlight this 12-foot tree.

******Impromptu Encounters with Art 1-5pm
Every Sunday visitors are encouraged to try their hand painting plein air, in the open air, just like the Lyme Art Colony artists. Painters are given brushes, palette, paint, canvas, and a smock and are sent to paint down by the river or in Miss Florence's garden. All ages and skill levels welcome. There are also hands-on art projects, books, games and puzzles to enjoy. A great way to spend the day.

*****Historic Gardens Day 1-5pm Free with Museum Admission
