STOCKTON ASPARAGUS FESTIVAL April 23-25, 2010 25th Anniversary of one of California's largest food festivals! Destination Stockton... Located between San Francisco and Yosemite or Napa and the Gold Country, Stockton is about 80 miles east of San Francisco on the California Delta. Stockton offers groups rich and diverse activities for all ages. Start your day at one of the Valley’s finest museums, enjoy local cuisine for lunch, tour a historic Fox “California” Theatre and finish off the day with a cruise on the San Joaquin Delta. You may also consider customizing your day with a trip to the Lodi wine region, minutes away from Stockton or a trip California’s Mother Lode. HAGGIN MUSEUM Loved by generations of Stockton families, the Haggin Museum is a fine art and history museum which was referred to by Sunset magazine as “one of the under sung gems of California.” Its fine art collection features works by such noted 19th century painters as Albert Bierstadt, Rosa Bonheur, and William-Adolphe Bouguereau, as well as many other American and European artists. Its history displays focus on this area’s past and the accomplishments of its residents, such as Charles Weber, Stockton’s founder; Benjamin Holt, inventor of the Caterpillar track-type tractor; and Tillie Lewis, the “Tomato Queen.” Kids will love the store replicas in the basement, the Native American exhibit and the big tractors. The museum’s permanent art and history exhibits are augmented by a number of temporary exhibitions annually. Call for current schedule. The Museum also host’s Special events, such as family programs, lectures, and musical performances, that are held throughout the year. Docent led tours are available for any size group. Tip: The park (Victory Park) surrounding the museum is also a great place for a picnic! DOWNTOWN STOCKTON HISTORIC TOURS Downtown Stockton offers a variety of rich dining options as well as streets lined with some of Stockton’s finest architecture. Two historic gems in Downtown Stockton are “The (Hotel) Stockton” and the Bob Hope (Fox) Theatre. The Stockton is a recently renovated Historic hotel built in the 1920’s. Lobby tours are available and also highlight a mini-exhibit featuring excavated artifacts for the former Chinese Laundry near the site. Continuing your journey through the historic downtown brings you to the remarkable Bob Hope Theatre. In 2004, with an $8.5 million renovation complete, the Bob Hope Theatre was restored to its grandeur as when it was built in 1930. The theatre is listed on the National Register of Historical Places, and today it is host to a variety of entertainment acts. Tours can be arranged and group rates are available for performances. CULTURAL GEMS Stockton is an ethnically diverse community rich in restaurants and markets from all over the world. One recent addition to the Stockton cultural scene is the statues at the Cambodian Buddhist Temple, recently featured on an episode of Huell Howser’s “Road Trip.” These statues which tell the story of their Buddha, were all hand carved and painted by the local Cambodian community. The colorful and jewel encrusted beauties range from a few feet tall to nearly 20 feet, including a lying Buddha nearly 50 feet long! Groups are welcome to stop by and visit and learn about the culture and history of the Cambodian community. SPORTS Stockton was just named the #1 Minor League City in California and sport
