DescriptionThe refuge is one of 8 sites in Minnesota selected as an Important Birding Area (IBA) by the Audubon Society. It is located near the transition zone for 3 major ecosystems: tallgrass prairie, hardwoood forest and pineland. This biological diversity is highly attractive to wildlife, especially migrating birds. Still in development, the refuge attracts 225 species of birds. Refuge restoration has resulted in an explosive growth of uncommon prairie, water and shorebird species.
