Brief DescriptionMinnesota's oldest operating lighthouse on the North Shore

CategoryDuluth Minnesota Historic Site
DescriptionThe construction of the Two Harbors lighthouse began in 1891 and the first lighting of the light was on April 14, 1892. The Two Harbors Lighthouse was built to provide safe passage into the harbor and as a result Two Harbors was able to become the major shipping point for the iron ores of the Mesabi Range in the early 1900's. Four buildings on the lighthouse site contain artifacts and are currently open for visitors. The Fog Signal building houses artifacts from the early fishing industry and has a gift shop; the Assistant Keeper's residence has exhibits on area ship wrecks, the development of Agate Bay and a late 1800's residence exhibit. The Keeper's Quarters has been restored to the early 1900's and operates as a Bed and Breakfast; the attached light tower is open for visitors. Also, on the site is the pilothouse from the Frontenac shipwreck. The Two Harbors Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
