DescriptionWant a unique and nontraditional adventure for you and your family? Visit us at the Little River Zoo, a refuge to over 400 animals nestled in 55 acres of a remote wooded paradise in beautiful lakeside Norman. You'll meet the animals personally on a guided tour along natural pathways. You'll learn not just the facts about each animal, but who they are, how they live and how our lives are connected with theirs. We have a wide range of educational outreach programs for schools, community groups and churches. Each year there are special events here at the Zoo like The Kids for Kindness Festival which is celebrated in conjunction with Earth Day, and is designed to encourage children to actively protect and care for animals and the environment. Or how about the Little River Zoo's Junior Zookeeper summer camp program which is intended for children interested in learning what its like to be a real zookeeper.

*****little river zoo holds a very special place in my family's heart due to two very bad things happened to my family our house had burnt and I got hurt at work and had been off work for over a year and we had two very very special little guys called little dude and sandy they were my family's two pet ferrites and very sadly little dude came down sick and due to our sercomestances we was unable to care for him right and with very sadden harts we donated them to little river zoo and they were very great to deal with and let us see them when we could get to the zoo and I hope they bring as much joy to anyone that see's them as they did our family and I can not THANK little river zoo enough for there help in my book they are the BEST zoo around I would recommend this zoo to anyone that I see or talk to THANK YOU AGAIN LITTLE RIVER ZOO. *I visited this facility with high hopes and much good will toward Little River Zoo, but I left in tears. I believe the founders/directors were probably very well intentioned when they undertook this endeavor, but this zoo - now a non-profit - is poorly managed, the animals live in extremely cramped conditions, and I saw little sign (or information, when I asked) of enrichment programs for the animals The great majority appeared to me to be listless and depressed. Little Zoo's justification seems to come from the kind of reasoning that passed for acceptable fifty years ago - these animals weren't born in the wild, they are happy doing nothing, living within extremely undersized wired-in enclosures with no meaningful activity to occupy their time - as long as they are getting their food that's really all they want in life. How uninformed, how grossly ignorant. Whether they were or were not born in the wild they have basic instincts and needs. They are due basic dignity, an opportunity to engage in behaviors that are natural and comforting to them, the provision of adequate social contact/structures appropriate to each animal, and habitats that reduce the stress of being in captivity. Little River does a very poor job of this in my opinion. Some of the animals are reportedly rescued animals, and if this were the only option and the very best that Little River could do, perhaps that would be understandable. But links to their website address from charity.com lead nowhere, and the information provided on other websites where they are listed - and which the tour gruide reported - said that many were not rescued or homeless before they came to Little River. So does that mean that they are purchasing animals to bring in to live in such conditions? Apparently. It is moving to see visitors want to come and admire, learn about and support the well being of wild animals. It is also moving to see the volunteers at the facility that wish the same. But inform yourself of decency standards for wild animals in captivity, so that you can make a fair decision on what is really going on for these animals. Then I hope that you may also decide to speak out on their behalf.Female between 26 and 5507-19-08
*****my husband and i went to the little river zoo with no expectations. we were impressed with the obvious love and knowledge the caretakers had for the animals. we received histories on each of the animals we inquired about; several being brought in by misguided HUMANS who did not realize taking care of an animal especially a wild animal is a lifetime commitment that requires time, love, and education . we arrived at 9:30 a.m. (the zoo opens at 10:00) as our guide led us through we observed someone cleaning, feeding and watering (very thoroughly) when we spoke with him he had an intimate knowledge of each of the animals also. a zoo is a zoo-i felt this was a SANCTUARY, where the animals were well cared for. my husband and i will visit again. *I was so excited to take my 2 year old to a zoo for the first time only to be very disappointed. We only stayed 20 minutes after driving 35 to get there. I checked out the website and I made the mistake of assuming this place was on the up and up, I thought maybe the workers really cared about the animals but after visiting I DON'T THINK SO! This was the most disgusting place I have ever been. The poor animals looked so depressed in their cramped cages. I could not believe the zoo had two Caymans(small aligator type animal) in cages that were about 4ft x 6ft and the cage was all that seperated the animal from you so SMALL CHILDREN BEWARE. I cannot really even put into words how awful this place was. I wonder if the board of directors of this place have been to it in recent years to see how awful the animals are treated. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME IN GOING TO THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Female between 26 and 5507-05-09
*****This zoo was the best zoo i have been to in my life. It was very hands on and they give you a tour and explain things about the animals and share stories. I highly recommend this zoo!Female under 2507-27-09
