*****While driving down the scenic byway of Highway 68 we noticed a collection of signs and objects hanging in a wooded area. Then we past a huge sculpture that looked like a robot, larger then life size faces on trees made from fans, clown paintings and a small western town swamped with live animals, was not sure what we had just seen!So we turned around in a nieghbors driveway to check out this visionary folk art environment we were lucky enough to come across in Kentucky! The owners son greeted us at our vehicle and took us into a small building and told us the history of the old Apple Valley Store his Great Grandfather operated in the 30s-60s and how at different times it was a diner,Gulf gas station, bus stop, mail pick-up,tourist room for rent,a place to buy homemade apple cider and maybe moonshine as he tells the story. There is a lot of stuff to look at in this small building. It is packed with lots of history, not what we stopped for! Finall,he took us through the art environment that his dad's imagination and creative spirit has created out of old wood, carpet, video tapes, sheet metal, concrete, bottles, sinks, bathtubs, fans, stoves, lawnmowers, bikes, plastic pipes, old tires and the list goes on an on! All of this throw-away stuff from our throw-away society has been put together by this visionary artist who is creating an electric art tribute to old off-beat roadside attractions of years gone by.After we walked through Hillbilly Gardens,Chicken Town, falling down Rattle Snake& Gator Pitt style zoo and Hillbilly Jungle Walk with a hillbilly spaceship we were taken into an old garage type building that was filled with thousands of toys set up in a fantasy type toyland we could only dream about as children. There was lots of animated stuff and lots of toy trains running through this magical world of our childhood from floor to ceiling. After spending around twenty minutes looking at our childhood memories we discovered this long hair guy sitting on the back step of this funky looking house is the artist! He told us about how all of this came about. We admire his courage and determination to go for his unique dream when it would be easier to give up and become part of the subdivision world ! He showed us many news items, both print and television done on his place. It seems he is surrounded by stupid people who don't get it! Thank God for eccentric artist and smarter people who do. Imagine if we were all alike? This guy has not been dumb down by modern society and lives his life with creativity. He is the Andy Kaufman of the art world.Don't miss the chance to see the unque ever growing place and have your picture taken next to a sign that reads "Stay sane inside insanity".Male between 26 and 5508-28-09
