Hello, my name is Jake Schorr, owner of The Carriage Company. I’ve been sharing carriage rides with folks since 1979. Our 1st carriage was built in the basement of a restaurant named, Jefferson Square. The Commercial Appeal did a story about how we had to take it apart to get it out of the basement. Give me a minute or two and I’ll bend your ear with more Horse Tales.
Any time you have a special request, please let me know. I would be pleased to help you. |

Don't Bother! | I have had a great trip to Memphis, my first time, but I am very saddened by the poor horses I saw last evening, a gray or roan one in particular. He/she was pulling a carriage and looked very exhausted. It was in the evening, but the temperature was still close to 100 degrees. When I get back home, I will write letters to the Animal Protection and Humane Society. These hills are too difficult for these horses pulling these heavy carriages with big fat people in them, especially with the temperature hovering around 100 degrees. (I have horses and I know what an exhausted horse looks like. And someone has said some were saved from the glue factory. I'm not so sure this is really a save with the one I saw last evening. It was a roan or gray horse, and the carriage kind of looked like a cinderella carriage without any cover on it. It had a female driver. The poor horse was lugging in, trying to pull that carriage up a slight hill. His/her head was turned quite a bit. I thought it would just drop from exhaustion.) Come on people, don't make these horses work when it's above 80 degrees. How thoughtless can you be?

Excellent! | I surprised my wife with a carriage ride from our wedding to the reception. You should've seen the look on her face when we came out of tthe church! FYI-The price was much lower than quotes from other companies. | Middle age male | 02-02-09 |
Excellent! | Get a Life! I know that at least 2 of the horses in this company were saved from the glue factory. You should really complain about things you're more informed about. This is a great company and the horses are dearly loved by the owner and all employees! | Middle age female | 10-01-08 |
Don't Bother! | I was saddened to see the horses standing out on Union St all day in that heat looking exhausted, hot and thirsty, while dirty over weight people sat on their rear ends doing nothing to make the conditions better for the horses. Also they had their dogs and pet pigs sitting out in this heat. I was with a group of 25 people who all declined to participate in this cruelty of " carriage rides" when these horses were already taxed on their physical abilities. I asked some local staff who see these horses daily and they all said that the treatment of these horses is inadequate. One person said they wish they could go out and turn them all loose.
I am forwarding my observations to PETA ( People for the ethical treatment of animals).
The amount of water in those very small buckets is no where near the requirements of horses, however it does not matter since during my two day stay I never once saw them receive any water.
I wish people would see that animals DO in fact feel, think and need food and water and rest. The heat affects animals just as much as people only they do not get the relief they need unless the people "caring" for them give it to them. | Middle age female | 09-14-08 |
