DescriptionFounded in 1949, the Florida West Coast Symphony has the distinction of being the oldest continuing orchestra in the State of Florida. The organization has twice been ranked first among all Florida musical organizations by the grants panel of the Florida Arts Council’s Cultural Institutions Program, which provides major funding for organizations of excellence. Today’s symphony is a dynamic, multi-faceted organization dedicated to excellence in both performance and education. A budget of nearly $5.7 million supports a vital institution in an exciting period of artistic growth. The Symphony presents over 100 concerts of diverse repertoire each year in Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties on the west coast of Florida, under the direction of artistic director Leif Bjaland. Its educational programs include an extensive Youth Orchestra Program, music education classes for all ages, community outreach programs, and the Sarasota Music Festival for college-age musicians of the highest caliber, designated the Official Teaching and Performing Festival of the State of Florida.
