DescriptionThe Historic Paramount Theatre opened on September 14th, 1929. It is only one of two "atmospheric" theatres left still in operation in Minnesota. As you walk in to the theatre, you are magically transformed to another place and time. The house lights dim and "evening falls" and you are whisked away to a Spanish village under twinkling stars and clouds that move lazily across the summer sky. The Paramount ran as a first run movie house and was very popular and successful until it closed in 1975 because of competition and a change in movie going. An entrepreneur from Wisconsin bought it and it re-opened as a disco/bar two years later. It operated as a disco, a non-alcoholic teen club, a live music venue, and a comedy club until 1987 when it closed and was put up for sale again. In 1989 a group of arts and history minded citizens started researching the possibility of restoring the beautiful place. In the early '90's The Austin area Commission for the Arts was formed and owns and operates the theatre. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 and has been restored to its original glory and is used as a performing arts center.
