Kitt Peak National Observatory

Description of this Tucson Attraction: Founded in 1958 Kitt Peak National Obsevatory is the world's largest observatory with 25 optical and two radio telescopes. Mananged by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory and funded by the National Science Foundation Kitt Peak has been conducting scientific research for over 50 years. The Kitt Peak visitor center runs a number of programs including day tours of some of the telescopes, nightly star gazing programs by reservation only, classes and workshop on a variety of astronomy subjects. Chaeck our web site for details. Open daily from 9 am to 4:00 pm closed Thanksgiving, Christman and New Years Day. The observatory sits on top of a 6,875 foot mountian with no services on the Tohono O'odham reservation. Admission is free but there is a charge for guided tours and programs. The visitor center has a small exhibit area with a gift shop known for it Tohono O'odham crafts along with astronony related items. The Observatory is 56 miles outside of Tucson on state route 86 (Ajo Way).
