Best Time to Visit Flagstaff Arizona
Obviously, if you are in Arizona to ski, winter is when you’ll visit. Otherwise late spring and early fall are optimal for seeing the sights and avoiding the crowds. Average Flagstaff Weather
Flagstaff’s locale causes temperature ranges throughout most of the year that require layered fashions, light jackets or sweaters. During January, the coldest month, daytime highs average a winter-pleasant 42 degrees Fahrenheit but average lows plummet to the mid-teens. Summer has the same contrast; in July when average hits are in the low 80s, the temperature drops to average lows in the fifties. July and August are the warmest and wettest months with close to three inches of annual rainfall each. June is pleasant and dry with highs in the 70s and less than a half inch of anticipated rainfall for the month.

Transportation
Once you are in Flagstaff you’ll find that the historic downtown area is an easy place to get around on foot. Flagstaff’s public transit company, Pine Country Transit, isn’t really useful for visitors; the public buses only run once per hour and cease operations at 6 p.m. To use taxi service you’ll need to call in advance; cabs don’t cruise the streets. It's best to have a car to visit Flagstaff.

If you don’t drive to the area you’ll probably fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The airport is served by 21 airlines providing nonstop service from Phoenix to 104 cities around the world. It’s a good airport for connections --- Phoenix is really a place where you can get to from anywhere. Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Courtesy, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thirty Car Rental agencies have airport locations. Northern Arizona Shuttle, (866) 870-8687, provides service from the airport to Flagstaff.

In-Season Costs
You’ll find an IHOP, a smattering of Burger Kings, Dominos, Denny’s, and the like but during your stay you’ll want to indulge in the quirky cafes and upscale eateries that inhabit this small yet cosmopolitan city. In Flagstaff you can cut it to the bare bones and get out for under $20 a day for meals or you can indulge in some excellent dining for around $20 for three courses sans vino. You will be hard pressed to find a bargain rate beneath $50 and that is stretching it. Careful forward planning can find budget rooms under around $48 nightly. Expect to spend around $20 for bare bones meals, around $35 for nicer per day. Be certain you figure car rental fees into your budget; this is not an area rich in public transport.

Arizona Tourism - Flagstaff Attractions, Activities and Day Trips
Flagstaff is a perfect take-off point for several day trips to diverse settings. Sunset Crater, named for the remarkable coloration of its cone, is 12 miles from Flagstaff on US-89. Twelve miles north of Sunset Crater you can visit Wupatki National Monument, the ancient home of numerous tribal groups. You can purchase a combined ticket to both monuments at either site’s visitor center for $3. Between 1100 and 1250 AD, Walnut Canyon, 10 miles east of Flagstaff just south of I-40, was home to a thriving Sinagua community.

For a great drive, take US-89A south from Flagstaff through Oak Creek Canyon for 28 miles to Sedona. The new age refuge of Sedona is worth a visit if you have an interest in the new age healers, psychics, and mystics that inhabit the area. Sedona’s visitor center lists tour operators that cover the area; reach them at 1-800/288-7336. From Sedona continue on US-89A through Red Rock Country. The enormous mesas and red sandstone buttes are the images of the west that movies brought to the American consciousness.

When you’ve had enough of wide open spaces --- or simply want to see what’s on in the nearest big city --- Phoenix is close enough for a day trip.
