DescriptionAt dawn every Labor Day close to 500 hearty souls jump into the mighty Columbia River and swim the 1.1-mile stretch across the river to Hood River. Welcome to the annual Roy Webster Columbia River Cross-Channel Swim. The swim, which attracts participants from around the world, originated in 1942 when local orchardist Roy Webster challenged himself and some friends to swim across the river and back. Now on the day of the swim participants board the famous Sternwheeler paddleboat on the Hood River shoreline and are ferried to the Washington side. When signaled, swimmers jump off the boat in the “refreshing” Columbia and head back for the Oregon shore. This event (in its 72nd year!) brings back swimmers again and again.
