DescriptionAll aboard for a two hour train ride through the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota viewed from a new and unique perspective! The 1880 Train operates four steam-powered departures 7-days a week from early May through early October. We also offer diesel powered Holiday Express winter train rides on select weekends in November and December.

The 1880 Train is a tourist railroad that has been in operation since 1957, one of the oldest continuous steam train operations in North America. Passengers can board the train from either end with depots Hill City and Keystone, and customize their itineraries to have extended layovers in either town. Both depots offer snacks and gift shops, as well as the Highliner Snack Shop next to the depot in Hill City serving quick-grab lunches, drinks, and sweets out of historic WWII Heavyweight passengers cars Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

The rails used by the 1880 Train has been in place for over 120 years originally serving the mining communities of Keystone and Hill City, and later hauling supplies for the construction of near-by Mount Rushmore. The narrated, two hour train-ride tackles some of the steepest grades still pulled by steam locomotives and then rolls downhill past old mines, broad meadows, and tight canyons of the Black Hills of South Dakota. Over 15 road crossings each way means plenty of chances to hear the unique and cherished sound of a steam whistle.

Summertime special event trains include weekly Old West Shootout trains perfect for families with kids as well as adults-only Wine Express and Oktoberfest trains. See our website for Special Events dates and times.
